Google Assistant Help: Troubleshooting Music Playback

We all know how solid of a support is our music app in our day-to-day lives. Our daily commute to work and the lonely stroll in the park wouldn’t be interesting if it were not for the music apps on our phone. With Google Assistant, you don’t have to use your hands to control your playlist. Your commands to the device will automatically fetch your favorite songs and play them for you.

Yet, as is the case with a lot of apps, Google Play Music is no exception to issues. We’ve compiled some common issues faced by the Google Assistant users and the potential solutions to address them. Try every step below, one by one until the issue is cleared!

  • Check if the Google app and the music app have been granted the necessary permissions.
    1. On your Android phone, open the Settings tab.
    2. Tap Apps & Permissions > Google > Permissions.
    3. Slide all the options to the right and see that all of them are green.
    4. Head back to the Apps & permissions screen.
    5. Now, move ahead to the music service app.i.e., Google Play Music.
    6. Access the Permissions menu of this app.
    7. In order to access locally stored music files, grant the app storage permission.
  • Link the music service app and the Assistant device to the same Google account.
    1. Launch the Google app and tap More.
    2. You’ll be able to find your Google account at the top of this screen.
    3. Tap the Menu icon on the Google Play Music app and find the Google account linked to it.
    4. If both these accounts are not the same, add the desired account to both the apps.
  • Add a new music service to the existing Google account.
    1. Access Settings > Music within the Google app. Hit the link icon next to the preferred music app.
    2. Tap Link Account > Agree.
    3. You can add as many musical apps as you want to the Google account.
    • On the Google Assistant device, pick the music service in question as the default one.
    • Include the phrase “in my library” in your request command to the device.
    • Don’t forget to create a playlist of locally stored music before requesting the Google Assistant to play that.
