BOTTLENECK AT PRINTERS HAS DERAILED SOME HOLIDAY BOOK SALES
Readers have bought an enormous number of books this year. This year 2018 has become the blockbuster hit for the publishing industry. The overall sale has risen about 5%. Michelle Obama’s 'Becoming', Bill Clinton and James Patterson’s 'The President Is Missing' have sold millions of copy. It became a fantastic treat for literary fiction.
Hike in the sale has created trouble for the authors, publishers, and agents during the critical festive holiday season. Keeping up the demands and satisfying the readers, lead to the shortage of stocks in the market. Many favourite books such as Lisa Halliday’s 'Asymmetry', Rebecca Makkai’s 'The Great Believers' were listed as Out of Stock on Amazon during the Christmas season. Rebecca Makkai advised the readers to shop the book in independent retail stores for her novel as Amazon listed Out of Stock. Books from the lesser-known authors also went short in supply the week before Christmas. Ms.Halliday tweeted saying ‘All of a Sudden, there is just no capacity’. This backlog has created trouble for the January release books because they can't print copies on time. At least a dozen of book release has been postponed at Penguin Random House. The e-book sales have dropped down, and the paperback editions have risen-up.
Printing industries are facing problems like paper shortages, increase in paper prices, and low employment. The well known Quad Graphics is facing challenges due to the fall in employees. Some famous publishers are investing in print infrastructure and inventory management in recent times to improve their capacity and supply more copies quickly.
